Farmer Nutrition and Health at the Center of Climate Resilience

Smallholder farmers produce 70–80% of the world’s food, yet many remain food insecure and highly vulnerable to climate change. While governments and organisations are investing in climate-smart agriculture, drought-resistant crops, and resilient technologies, one critical piece is often missing: the nutrition and wellbeing of farmers themselves.

At the Workforce Nutrition Alliance (WNA), we believe that a nourished farmer is a climate-resilient farmer. Strengthening farmer health must go hand in hand with improving productivity and climate adaptation efforts.

WNA supports organisations to integrate workforce nutrition programmes for smallholder farmers across four pillars:

– Access to healthy food
– Nutrition education
– Nutrition-focused health checks
– Breastfeeding support

To support implementation, WNA has developed a dedicated Farmers’ Workforce Nutrition Guidebook Series, providing practical guidance for organisations seeking to build healthier, more resilient farming communities.

As global leaders convene around climate action, including discussions linked to COP30, farmer nutrition must be recognised as a core climate adaptation strategy. Investing in the wellbeing of those who feed the world strengthens livelihoods, stabilises supply chains, and builds more resilient food systems.
